Avalon History File (Last Updated: April 16th, 1997)
────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Version 0.77 (Wide Beta 3)
──────────────────────────
- We've contracted a VERY talented Artist for some upcoming RIP & ANSI
Graphics for both ROK and Avalon. We have some of them already in use
in Avalon's opening storyline, which has been re-written to suit the
awesome new graphics. The new ANSI Graphics have to be seen to be
believed! They are simply awesome. And...more are coming in upcoming
releases! (RIP is not in yet, though, they're still in the works)
- Some changes to the way CONFIG.EXE handles stuff... Firstly, in the
event of an [I]nstall or [R]eset, if that a SysOp has entered their
registration codes, it will now save that information instead of it
being erased. Also, in the [E]nter Reg Codes area, when you enter
your codes, pressing ENTER will now NOT delete your code line. That's
sort of a confusing thing to try to explain. <g> Finally, we think
we've taken care of all the problems with the Registration system. If
a SysOp fiddled around a bit in CONFIG, sometimes it would declare
that the reg codes would be invalid (even if they weren't). We've
worked on this area for like two hours and it seems to be working fine
now (emphasize seems). Thus, we hope we've taken care of this problem
once and for all...if you have more problems in this area, please, let
us know. -Thanks!
- Fixed many problems in the [R]ob Bank option (just for Thieves). After
a Thief fought a Guard, that guard's account would immediately become
duped. Also, it would repeatedly fight the same Guard over and over
again on occassion. We've fixed the dupe account bug there (and tested
it out), and also, you only have to fight a Guard once to get into the
Bank. :-)
- In Daily News additions after a Player Battle victory/defeat, it will
now show the correct name instead of a blank.
- If PLAYER.DAT does not exist when the Player Editor is loading up, it
will display the file not found instead of erroring out.
Version 0.76 (Wide Beta 2)
──────────────────────────
- We wish to thank everyone for the overwhelming response to Avalon! We
are happy that you, the BBS'ing community, is pleased with our latest
endeavour in the BBS world. Thanks for being so nice in bug reporting
and such. Thanks again from all of us at BFS!
- Added a display in the Monster Combat area to show how much Currency
the user has on hand.
- Added "F" key in the Monster Combat area -- to "[F]etch Go-For", and
automatically deposit all currency on hand into the SNI Bank.
- LOCAL.BAT will now execute RUNAV.BAT 0, instead of AVALON.EXE 0.
- Players no longer have to pay Currency to make an announcement.
- Players can no longer have free Elixirs at the Inn. :)
- Modified SAMPLE.BAT file a little bit for better use on Multi-Node
BBS's.
- CONFIG's Player Editor will now Pack the user file (remove all empty
accounts) before it loads up. This fixes a run-time error that has
been reported several times to us.
- Included a new EXE in the Avalon Archive - NOW_OFF.EXE. This program
will check to see if an "Online Flag" is set on a character, and if it
is, remove it. It's handy for single-line BBS's, because sometimes a
character might not be in the game, but it still says they are in it.
Single-Line BBS's run this before Avalon is ran in the batch file for
convenience.
- Fixed a BAD bug in the Armour Shop. What happened was if a player had
sold their Armour, their Armour variable would get named to "Mighty
Fists" -- the name of the weapon if the user does not have a weapon.
Thus, afterwards, they would never be able to buy armour again, period.
Fixed now. :-)
- Another BAD bug... <g> This one had to do with the bonus MP points
given to Necromancers after a level up would go to MP, not Max MP.
Thus, they'd get the bonus points, but they'd be temp pts. Fixed.
Many thanks to Edmund Wong for pointing this out to us!
- Minor cosmetical change when pressing [R] in Mentor's Palace.
- Fixed a minor problem in the [G]uard Listing option in the SNI Bank.
- Removed all $1 Currency rewards when a user has killed a Monster.
- SNIBANK.DAT (the Bank Guard data file) will now be reset during the
Game Reset sequence in CONFIG.
- A bunch of new stuff to the Daily/Yesterday News. We neglected to
include this stuff in WB1. Player/Monster Battle accounts (wins &
losses) are now mentioned in the News, as well as other minor stuff.
Some more stuff is still to come in this area.
- That's about it! Many more stuff is yet to come, so look for WB3 in
your area in about a week or so from today (Wednesday, April 9th).
Version 0.75 (Wide Beta 1)
──────────────────────────
- This is the first version to be released to the public in Wide Beta. Beta
testing still continues with the original testers too, though.
- Healing Potions now heal a random amount of HP between 5 and 9. In
v0.62, it said it would do this, but it was still Random(1..7). Fixed
now.
- [G]eneral Warez Store from the Player vs. Player Duel menu can now
be accessed.
- Pressing ENTER in a Mentor Fight should no longer exit a player back
to the Mentor Challenge menu.
Version 0.62 (Beta)
───────────────────
- Dupe Account bug fixed in the Armour Shop. Basically, when a player
bought a new Armour, it would dupe the first account in the PLAYER.DAT
file. Fixed now.
- Players can no longer have a blank name for their game Alias. ;-)
- Setup Node(s) in CONFIG.EXE now works right. It worked BEFORE v0.61,
but I think one of my partners (Brad...that wascal) played with my source
and it screwd up temporarily. Fixed now.
- If NEWS.TXT does not exist in the Avalon Dir, it will now automatically
be created when a user reads the news.
- Health Potion costs have been lowered to $5 Curreny/Potion instead of
$10 Currency. This should help users save a bit more Currency after each
Monster Combat fight. Also, Potions now heal a random amount between 5
and 9, not 1 and 7 which is the way it was before.
- Haggling for MORE Currency when selling an item in Weapon/Armour Shop
will now give you the amount it said it would. <g>
- Listing other online characters should now work properly when there is
more than one character in Avalon at the same time. I believe we've
fixed the same name listing bug here.
- Added an option in CONFIG.EXE's Player Editor to delete accounts.
- AVMAINT.EXE will now pack the user file nightly.
- The listing of characters is also now working fine. It should no longer
show some garbage on the screen due to empty account records (since there
will be none thanks to AVMAINT's packing of the user file nightly).
Version 0.61 (Beta)
───────────────────
- Boy, a MAJOR bug was fixed... Basically, players can now advance levels.
This bug crept in just with 0.60's checking of unregistered versions, and
regardless of whether you were registered or not, it would not allow users
to advance levels (and also it would say the game is unregistered even if
it was not).
- Mentor's no longer have 0 Health Points. :)
Version 0.60 (Beta)
───────────────────
- News file, both Daily and Yesterday, is now completed in Avalon. The
daily news file is NEWS.TXT, and Yesterday's news file is YNEWS.TXT. If
NEWS.TXT does not exist upon Avalon's execution, it will automatically
be created. Likewise, if YNEWS.TXT does not exist, and a user wishes
to view Yesterday's News, it will inform them that the file does not
exist - instead of exitting with an error of file not found. Also,
CONFIG.EXE's [I]nstall Procedure creates the NEWS.TXT file.
- No two characters (or more) can have the same alias in the game now.
- Re-did the Local Logon sequence, to match Avalon's colors, etc.
- Characters can no longer have multiple investments at the SNI Bank.
- Many *NEW* things in the SNI Bank of Riches. First, Thieves can rob
the bank now. Only Thieves can (which makes sense). Warriors and
Necromancers can get a job there for 50 Currency/day, to serve and
protect the Bank from Thieves who're trying to rob it. Basically, a
Thief who is robbing the bank must get past a Guard first -- which is
a random Guard from the entire guard listing in SNIBANK.DAT (all the
Guard's who work there). Thieves can't get a job -- the Warrior there
is "descriminatory". ;-) Check it out, this is quite a cool addition.
- I've stumbled across something MAJOR... Seems I forgot to put in the
bonus attributes thing for Levels three and above. What does this
mean? Well, every time you gained a level from three and above, you
would not get your attribute bonuses increased (like Str, Def, etc...).
Thus, this is fixed now, and all bonuses are available through level
ten now. This could be one of the reasons why Monster Combat fights
are so tough on middle levels.
- The Inn of Strathburg is now completely finished! (Even with an nice ANSI
screen...) Some really cool options there. Subsequently, INNCHAT.TXT is
now included in the AV_V*.ZIP archive (which is the Inn's conversation
text file).
- More pauses removed here and there for better ease of gameplay.
- The Weapon Shop has nearly been re-done completely. Almost everything
is changed. There are some awesome ANSI graphics now (in both the list
weapons screen and in the initial entrance screen). Players can now
own the Weapon Shop and rake in 10% of all profits (and sell it for a
33% profit to another player). Way cool, IMO.
- Much like the Weapon Shop, the Armour Shop has been completely re-done.
It also features awesome (IMHO) ANSI Graphics (a nice multeez cross, if
that is how you spell it...). It too can now be purchased by players.
- 3rd-Party EGO Support is now included in Avalon. Anyone who wishes to
write an EGO (or whatever) for Avalon can now do so. The [E]GO Menu is
subsequently now accessable from Main Street in Strathburg.
- Mail now actually works now too! In previous beta versions, users were
able to write mail to one another, but the recipient could never read
the message when they logged on. Fixed now, and from what I can see,
it appears to work fine. :-)
- Account #0 can now be editted in CONFIG.EXE's Player Editor.
Version 0.55 (Beta)
───────────────────
- Haggling Darlikan or Krista in the Weapon or Armour Shop will now
work the way it is supposed to.
- A character can now drink multiple Healing Potions at one time.
- Fixed Run-Time Error 100 in AVMAINT.EXE, where it would error out if
the PLAYER.DAT file did not exist.
- Re-balanced (or at least tried to) the Monster Combat, for both the
character's damage and monster damage. After running some tests, it
appears that it is much more balanced than in previous versions.
- CONFIG.EXE is now completed. Everything that's there works now. There
are still some extra stuff to be added later (like more Editors), but it
will do for now.
- [L]ist Players from the opening screen now works, as does the [G]ame
Environment option.
- Players are no longer allowed to have infinite Player Combat fights. :)
- Color codes are no longer allowed in a character's alias.
- Healing Potions can now be used from the Player Combat menu.
- Fixed a MAJOR bug in the Weapon Shop. Basically, if a user was smart,
and could pick up on little things, they'd get the best weapon (heck,
any weapon) for free upon each login. I don't know how I stumbled onto
this one, but I'm glad I did! It's fixed.
- A user should no longer face the same monster twice (or more) in a row.
- Upped the beginning currency to $1,000 from $500, to help the beginner
players out just a bit more with some armour and stuff.
- Fixed some minor things in the Weapon and Armour shop. Haggling will
now work the way it is supposed to work. ;-)
- Minor changes here and there all over the place.
- Many unnecessary pauses removed in a lot of different spots.
- Added an option to basically skip the majority of the opening sequence
and storyline. It's easier this way for players who've read it all before
and stuff.
Version 0.51 (Beta)
───────────────────
- Reduced the PLAYER.DAT file size per record from around 2k/record to about
250b/record. In the process of this change, hopefully all PLAYER.DAT file
corruption problems have been erradicated. The bloating of the PLAYER.DAT
file causes records to become screwed up, and thus, if this happend on a
system, a reset is necessary when upgrading to this version.
- Fixed some bugs in the Monster Combat areas. It should work fine now,
and should read in the correct Monster Data records for each fight. We
hope it works 100% right now.
- It will now check at startup if the user has already been in the game
previously today. This way, if a player is killed, and s/he has not
entered Avalon yet today, it will still let them play. We wanted this
in v.050 beta, but it must've been forgotten somewhere down the line.
- Now incorporates Dexterity into the Battle Combat Equations in both the
Monster and Player vs. Player battles. Basically, the more Dexterity a
character has, the better the chance of them dodging an enemy strike.
- New User Record routines have been implemented (taken from the new ROK,
Version 1.05). These updated routines will help to ensure that no dupe
accounts, erasing of player accounts, or any other bad thing can happen
to the PLAYER.DAT file when Avalon is running.
- Finished the opening screen when a player logs on. Much better than the
old one... ;-)
- MENTORS.DAT is now fully completed. All Mentors from Level One to Twenty
are in the data file. MONSTERS.DAT is half done (Levels One through Ten)
are completed right now. The other half should be done by the time the
next beta version is released.
Version 0.50 (Beta)
───────────────────
- Released to twenty beta testers across North America. Reports flooded
back ASAP. Bugs found, and fixed.
- Infinite Monster Combat fights can no longer happen. :-) Don't know how
we missed that one. <g>
- It will actually find the player's name when trying to write a letter to
another character.
- Correct color changes here and there.
- Other minor things fixed, miscellaneous stuff not noted here.
- Monster Data File (MONSTERS.DAT) updated with new info, stats, and new
levels (up to level five now -- will tide users over until the rest of
them are coded in).
Version 0.49 (Beta)
───────────────────
- The first version of Avalon is put online on The Inner City BBS for alpha
testing. Many initial bugs noticed, and since fixed.
